The choice of what to contain your horses with is a very important one. The right type of horse fence means safety and security for your four-legged friends, while the wrong choice can actually put them in more danger. But there are other concerns besides safety, including price, availability and more.

Popular and traditional, wood rail fencing has some serious pros and cons. On the upside, it is very attractive when maintained well, and very visible to horses. On the downside, it can entice horses to chew on it, and does need a fair amount of regular maintenance. As both a pro and a con, it will break if a very spooked horse crashes into it. Many people who choose this type of fencing also choose to run a strand of hot wire above the top rail.

Pipe fencing is like wood rail fencing, except that pipes are substituted for the wood. This is sturdy fencing with little give, but the pipes are large enough that horses don’t often run into it. It does not require as much maintenance as wood rails, and is unlikely to be chewed on, or damaged if horses do chew on it.

Vinyl or PVC fencing looks like painted wood rail fencing, but requires almost no maintenance. However, it is expensive to purchase and usually does not hold horses in very well by itself. Horses can and do push the pieces loose and escape from this type of fencing regularly. Many owners have great success with stringing a single hot wire (electrified wire) across the top of these fences, however, to discourage the horses from pushing on it.

Although it is commonly used as a supplement to other types of fencing, sometimes hot wire is used alone. Wider tape ‘wires’ are available for this kind of use, in order to make the fence easier for horses to see, as lack of visibility is the main downside for this option. It is very easy to move around, which makes it ideal for rotating pasture access or creating a new boundary.

Wire fencing can be knocked down by deer or other animals, so check it regularly if it is the sole type of fencing used. It is also not recommended for use as the only type of fencing near any kind of danger, such as roads, for this same reason. For hot wire fencing (either alone or in combination with another type of fencing) away from electrical outlets, you can purchase solar chargers.

Wire fencing of the non-electrified type is cheap and easily available. For this reason, it is still sometimes used, even though it has several downsides. One downside is that it is not very visible to horses, who may run into it if spooked. Flagging tape should always be used to make it more obvious. Welded wire mesh can catch legs if the size is wrong, as well.

These are not the only options when it comes to horse fence. Buck and rail fencing requires no digging for posts, and is popular on rocky terrain. Tubular panels can create a pen or secondary gate almost instantly. Consider the needs of yourself and your horses before purchasing any type of fencing.
